West Midlands Cross League

2016 Club Hill Climb

After a wet start the day quickly brightened into a beautiful Autumn Sunday, just right for a hill climb.

This years event was again a combined event with the Newport C. C. but was further boosted by the entry of many 'Clarion' riders.

The Clarion cycling clubs are from all over the country and have their annual meeting in Ironbridge on the same week end as the Hill climb and have now officially adopted it as their National event.

The Clarion were a socialist cycling movement formed over 120 years ago but have evolved over the years and now cater for all manner of ages, abilities and interests.

This influx of Clarion riders swelled the start list to 44 riders with the overall fastest being Matt Garthwaite of Rhino Velo with a time of 3m 13s only 8 seconds short of the record held by Stuart Dangerfield of the W-ton Wheelers and set in 1990 26 years ago!

Matt Morris successfully defended his title for a third successive year with a very creditable 3m 38s and second overall.

Matt and fellow vets took the top five positions, but young Grace Lister put in a storming ride to take the youth award ahead of Gabby Homer.

Grace surprised may who don't know her by recording 4m 36s a time that many seniors would envy!

After a welcoming drink at Darcy's Restaurant run by Jim Morrison of the Newport C. C. the club run enjoyed a warm and sunny ride back to the Stadium.   Results
